Kids in the Kitchen (KITK)
In 2006, Junior Leagues implemented a League-wide initiative called Junior
Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen designed to help our communities address the
urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition. By joining
together to make an impact on the future health of our youth, Junior Leagues
helped to heighten awareness and recognition of the power and heritage of our
international organization.
In its first year, over 225 Leagues across four countries participated
in the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen program with media coverage reaching over 80
million people with messages about the issues surrounding childhood obesity
and the Junior League’s initiative to address these. Due to the
success of its first year and the overwhelming need to address this important issue facing today’s
youth, we decided to continue the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen
program in 2007. With the help of program sponsor, Cartoon Network, and
celebrity spokespersons like George Stella, the program has made over 450
million media impressions to date.
Our Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative aims to continue making an
impact in this area by educating the public at the grassroots level regarding
solutions to address childhood obesity. The Junior League of Wheeling has
promoted the Kids in the Kitchen both in conjunction with the Children’s Museum
of the Ohio Valley and with our signature project “The Kid’s Fair”.
